So what's different about us?

We think big (and small)

Our projects usually involve questions that depend on us seeing a bigger picture than traditional design shops. Questions such as 'How do we get the most out of our art department?' or 'What can we do to change the way our editors think?' or 'How can you leave us with a better way of using our resources?'. So we see the bigger picture of the power of design to enable change or innovation in business.

We worked with David Clark, the Editor at Vogue Living magazine (an iconic interiors style bible), to strengthen the magazine’s ability to connect with readers through its design.

Initially our discussions centred around the relationship between Editor and Art Director (a subject dear to our hearts). We recommended flexible, creative ways of working with the editorial and art teams and demonstrated our approach by embedding deluxe designers with Vogue Living for two months. The magazine has continued to grow in circulation and is still a bright spot for the publishers in a tough market place.

Lots of projects depend on us knowing the small details, in order to help our clients think bigger, and to make bigger changes. IBIS World is an organization that specializes in serious data analysis and reporting on all industries. The reports they produce are their only product. They came to us because of our detailed infographic and typographic editorial expertise. They were launching their comprehensive range into a world marketplace, and realised they needed to make the reports far more accessible to broaden their appeal and grow their competitive share.

We developed a fresh, intelligent and communicative approach that makes the fruits of their labours much easier to understand.

In fact most of our projects, in one way or another, are about significant change. When we first started designing newspapers, we were surprised by the disconnect between the ambitious briefing that we'd been given, and the bolted-down working relationships of staff who didn't see why they needed to change anything. We realised we needed to understand the culture change issues that would allow our designs to be used to their best by the staff.

What began as a search for a symbiotic business relationship has led us to work closely with Primed culture change consultancy on a wide range of projects that combine editorial and visual thinking to  make meaningful change possible for clients. We still haven't worked together to redesign a newspaper and its processes, but we've expanded each other's horizons to see the immense potential of our collaborative efforts.
